The play opened Saturday at the Palace Theatre in London. The book format of the script was released at midnight after Saturday night celebrations in around 5,000 bookstores and libraries.
‘It’s difficult to overstate how exciting it is to read a new story set in this widely loved fantasy universe. The thrill of a new Harry Potter book, even in script form, is its own kind of magic spell.’
Harry Potter still has the magic. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the script book for J.K. Rowling’s new play, sold more than 2 million print copies in its first 48 hours in the U.S. and Canada.
“Cursed Child surprised me. It revisits the original story we all know and love without eclipsing the new one. There are some fresh faces, since the narrative focuses heavily on Harry’s son, Albus Severus, but there’s also a slew of familiar ones—including some you might not be expecting.”
I actually really really like this script. The visuals are minimally written which just makes me ache to see how they do some of the tech on stage, but it’s a very fluid story with great subtext and humor. I can imagine a theatre roaring in laughter with some of the lines from the young Malfoy character. People need to learn how to read scripts and enjoy the interactivity it brings with the reader creating a personal interpretation of how dialogue is delivered.
Also, I don’t know how many other people reading this are taking it in, but there’s some personal magic happening within the reading for me as I have become a parent since the original series of books ended. I still feel like I’m hanging over Harry’s shoulder and now we both share being a father. I need to see this play in production!
