Do you want to gain millions of Instagram followers? Just do what Selena Gomez did.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the “Hands to Myself” singer explains exactly how she amassed 89 million followers on the social media platform — the most the app has seen — without even trying.
“It comes in a moment when I capture something happening, and I go, ‘Oh, that would be great for Instagram. I should post it.’ I know it’s boring, but that’s genuinely what I do,” she says. “It wasn’t my goal to be the most followed person.”
“I’m not sure there’s a method to my madness,” admits Gomez, who surpassed pal Taylor Swift for the top honor. She adds, “It’s my favorite social platform.”
The 23-year-old is now said to be the user with the most-liked Instagram photo of all time as well. Beating out ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, a picture of Gomez drinking a bottle of coke — shared on June 25 — has garnered over 4 million likes.
“I try to find a good balance of just being 100 percent myself and knowing when to post a really good selfie with good lighting,” she explains, noting that she now has her photographer tag along on her outings to capture any Insta-worthy moments. “I’ve created this bond with him, so it’s super organic when he takes photos.”
She adds of one particular photo that has over 2.9 million likes, “We were in the grocery store, all shopping for the bus, and I always eat when I shop. I remember one of the comments said, ‘I cannot believe she rented out the grocery store for a photo shoot,’ and I died laughing. I was like, ‘Well, I didn’t.’”
